| Photo competition winner of that special day (13/01/04) | |
|
The winner of the speedbirds.com photo competition is Dave Barker of Leamington Spa, Warwickshire with his entry entitled 'Last Chance'. In the opinion of the judging panel (myself, my good old mum and my mate Nigel) Dave's entry was technically excellent, using a long telephoto lens to narrow depth of field and bring objects closer together, was composed superbly with 216 the main focus, the Church spire, the houses of Bradley Stoke and the Brabazon Hangar all adding interest and perspective to the final image. It also proves that you didn't need ringside seats to get the best shots on the day. Dave used a Canon D30 Digital SLR camera, with a 350mm lens (SLR film camera equivalent focal length 500mm), Dave taking up the story of that image... "Myself and myfriend Chris travelled down to Filton from Leamington Spa in the Midlands to try and catch a last glimpse of this wonderful aircraft for the last time. We had already decided that we did not want to fight with the masses of crowds or be too far from the car in view of the weather on the day, therefore we headed for what appeared to be fairly high ground and hopefully somewhere on the approach path, although having only driven past Bristol on the M5 before that day an element of luck also helped. After about an hour of trying to find a suitable vantage point, as the time was getting near, we opted for a footpath across a field just off Swan Lane in Winterbourne, about two miles to the east of Filton. When the first approach started we could not believe our luck, we were positioned about 500 yards from the approach path, the only drawback being that we were looking into the sun, but this only affected one or two of the shots. In all I took about 50 shots of the two passes with the winning one being my last, hence the title " Last Chance ". Incidentally, the church in question is St Michaels C of E, of Church Rd, Winterbourne. Dave is - like all of us - an aircraft enthusiast, although he says that his real passion is radio controlled model aircraft. Congratulations to Dave for his winning entry, and thanks also to everybody else that entered. All entries will continue to be exhibited in the gallery section. |
